You should change your dressing as instructed by your healthcare professional, if wound fluid starts to leak from the dressing or if the dressing becomes damaged in any way. You should never leave a dressing in place for more than 7 days.

We have created the video above for you to watch and follow, as sometimes it helps to see how to apply a dressing before you do this yourself. Below is a short summary of steps outlined in the video.

1. Wash your hands with soap and water and dry thoroughly with a clean towel. Ensure you work from a clean area
2. Ensure the absorbent pad on your dressing is at least 1cm larger than the area to be dressed
3. Carefully open the packaging and place on gloves
4. If you have a dressing is in place, remove this first
5. Ensure the surrounding skin is free from creams and moisturisers which could prevent your dressing from sticking
6. Cleanse the area with clean water, or a cleansing solution if you’ve been given one
7. Dry the skin 
8. Pull back the clear plastic covers to the edge, taking care not to touch the adhesive surface or foam pad
9. Line the dressing up over the center of the wound. With one hand, place the dressing down, and use the other hand to fully remove the plastic cover on one side and smooth it down
10. Remove the second plastic cover and smooth the other side down. The dressing should not be stretched

If removing your dressing is difficult, try soaking it with sterile saline or water and then try again to remove it slowly. You can press down gently on the skin immediately surrounding the dressing and carefully lift one corner of the dressing. Continue lifting the dressing until all edges are free. If you are using your dressing for pressure injury prevention, the dressing corner can be lifted for inspection of skin and then resealed.  The dressing must be changed if skin is broken.

You should contact your healthcare professional if you have a new wound, your current wound increases in size, if there is new or increasing redness or swelling around the wound, if you are experiencing new or increased pain, or if there is a noticeable increase of smell or fluid leaking from the wound.
